Langkawi Ironman 2007 |

|
races Event Date: Saturday, February 24, 2007 Start Time: 07:15 AM End Date: Sunday, February 25, 2007 Ending Time: 12:15 AM

Ironman Malaysia takes place on Langkawi, a popular island resort destination in Malaysia. It's tough not because of the course, which consists of a very warm swim, a rolling bike and a relatively flat run course. It's tough because it can get really hot, especially during the run. How hot? In 2001 temperatures that reached 43 degrees Celsius (which is very close to 110 degrees Fahrenheit for anyone who thinks in those terms).
The day begins with a two-loop swim in Kuah Bay which starts and finishes alongside a giant eagle statue that dominates the Jetty Point port area.
Once they're out of the water, the athletes run up a short jetty to T1, grab their bikes, and get started on the three-loop bike course. The "loops" are actually out and back stretches that take the athletes from Kuah to the other side of the island before they turn around and come back. The turnaround at the end of each bike loop is right outside the Seaview Hotel, which serves as the race headquarters. It is the run that makes the race in Langkawi so tough. The terrain isn't that challenging - it's the heat that the athletes face as they go through the marathon that makes things difficult. After the fourth loop is complete, they run one kilometer back to the jetty, and end the day at the beautiful finish line which is just meters short of the spectacular eagle statue, a welcome beacon at the end of what will no-doubt be a tough day of racing.

True to the tradition....
It was HOT and SUNNY as previous year. A different bike course but it retained the same level of umph! Never ending ups and downs...
A BIG HAND to the organizers! (Clap-clap-clap) All aid stations were professionally handled. The water didnt run out while I was on the course. Plenty of support... applause to all the volunteers, helpers, rescuers, first aiders and cheerleaders. I think Mr Chan outdo himself! Kudos to Mr Chan and company. The best tri so far... Still room for improvement though... The bike course needed more marshals to eliminate people accusing others of drafting. Anyway... all of us are FAIR competitors right? Also, would be nice to have more drinks and food!!! or snacks at the end of the race... like maggie cup noodles or something. The swim course could use a little tweak too. Otherwise it was PERFECT!
I really enjoyed myself... after the fact! While racing, I was cursing! swearing! Why the hell did I get up this morning to torture myself for 6 gruiling hours! 6 hours and 12 mins to be exact. As soon as I crossed the finish line... man it was like an ORGASM! It was 27 mins better than what I did last year. What a way to celebrate my birthday!!! Yup... celebrated my birthday on the race course! But my present was given to me the day after by my daughter when she did her first Tri... she completed the swim (Sprint)... at age 7 ~~ YAY!
To all the winners.... CONGRATS! To Dino... You are one hard working triathlete... congrats on your BIG WIN! You deserve it... Kau lari macam kuda lah!

Singapore OSIM International Triathlon 2006 Race Report |
|
 |
|
 |
|
Friday 30th June, I waited patiently for my wife to get home from work and packed my bike. As most of you have known... its the brand new Kuota Kalibur. Test ridden it on Thursday to find that my sitting position is not at all comfortable compared to my trustworthy Specialized Allez. I have no time to tweak that as the race is going to be on Sunday. Any alteration will just have to be after the race and for the PD Triathlon.
We took the last flight into Singapore... Landed, walk out of the plane, ran to the nearest TV screen. There were 6 LARGE TV screens in the middle of the Terminal and looks like the place is packed. "What about our luggage?" the wife asked. "Just leave them there at the courosel." I replied. Managed to catch the second half match between Germany and Argentina. Soon as it was over... we went through the Imigration, collected our bags+bike then took a minivan... costs us Sin35. Mahal gile!
Being a Berjaya vacation Club member has its privilages. We were lucky that there is one in town. Its by Duxton road and not very far to my usual nightstop Hotel (Amara Hotel) which I stay when on duty.
Saturday 1st July, woke up early as my wife wanted to tour Singapore. We headed off to the Holiday Inn Atrium to collect my race kitt. 2 fancy pens, a handphone armstrap holder, some facial mist product, 30% OSIM discount voucher, 30% GNC discount voucher, 30% NB shoes discount voucher, GU powergel, Isotonic drink, 2 race number with safety pins, a black body marker, orange swimcap and the official race handbook + map. "So wheres the T-shirt?" I asked. "You'll get em during the race" the girl said.
Straight to Orchard road... In the taxi, I told myself quitely, maybe a good idea to go back to the hotel and leave the wallet+credit card. Had breakfast... then the madness starts! Bloody SALE EVERYWHERE. 40-70% it was insane! Takashimaya, Tangs, Lucky Plaza, Atrium etc etc... madness. My wife and I managed to control the urge and just bought stuff for our daughter after hours and hours in and out of shopping centers. I guess shes the winner on this trip. Had a lovely dinner by the river later that night.
Sunday 2nd July, woke up at 0645. By 0800 we were outside waiting for a cab. On the way the the race venue, we passed the BIG SPLASH! Oooh! that tingled my childhood memory. Used to go there everytime I visited Singapore when I was a child. I would go down the slide like a stuntman!
The race venue was at EASTCOAST E2 carpark next to some food restaurants.
According to the handbook: SAT 0800-0830 Kids 7-9 years Swim start 0830-0900 Kids 10-12 years Swim start 0900-0930 Kids 13-14 years Swim starts 0930-0950 Mini Swim Start 0950-1000 Mini Relay Swim Start 1030-1130 Sprint Swim Start 1130-1200 Sprint Relay Swim Start Total of 22 Start waves SUN 0800-0900 Elite Swim Start 0900-1200 Age group Swim Start 1200-1230 OD Relay Swim Start Total of 13 Start Waves (my start was at 1130 Age group 30-34 Swim Start)
Just next to the carpark was an open area, a massive Transition Area. It had to be massive is there were more than 3500 PARTICIPANTS! Checked in, got my T-shirt and went to watch the Elite Racing. Familiar names like Kimberly Yap and Eugene Chan were announced a few times as they passed by. Also there were some other pros from all over the world trying for the US16,100.
The race seems like "orderly chaos" Every 10 mins there were swim starts. Participants MUST know when they start and the colour of the swim caps tells you when. I preped my bike and head over to the beach. Last minute look at the handbook. The swim is a 2 loop beach start. The bike is a no-drafting 4 loops around the park and the run is a 2 loop pass a lake.
Man, women, big, small, thin and fat... nice bikes, big bikes, mtb bikes, carbon bikes, titanium bikes, just a bike, looks like a bike... orca suit, zoot suit, no suit, bikinis... Nice to see everyone coming together for one purpose... EXERCISE! The course was a stream of ppl racing non-stop from various wave starts.
At exactly 1130, my race starts. Oh my god! the water was so choppy it was almost impossible to swim freestyle. I had to swim breaststroke to the first bouy. Then freestyle/breast-stroke alternate to the next bouy as we swim parallel to the beach. Then freestyle to the beach. A short run on the beach for the next loop. The water was murky! Cant even see my own hand while swimming. I swam relatively slower compare to my other races. Maybe lack of experience swimming in choppy waters. Took me 31 mins.
A good 200m run to the transition to collect our bike. The bike course was flat. Flattest course ever! but 4 loops of twisted and plenty hair-raising corners. Lots of crashes. Some even broke his fingers. I felt really good on the bike cause I was still fesh out of the water. Couldnt really "push" during the swim because the wave was choppy. Kuota Kalibur did a blazing 34km/hr average on the course. I was pleasantly happy. However, I did feel a bit of a back-ache after the third loop. I really need to tweak my riding position on this bike.
The run course was not as challenging as in Kenyir or Bintan but it was awesome. Plenty of shades and FLAT! Water stations on every 1km providing water and isotonic. My legs felt good after the bike. The 10km run took me 53 mins on the dot. The numbers make it fun because there were plenty of runners out there infront of you motivating you to catch them.
Overall, the race was good. Not as good as Phuket or Bintan though. Maybe my expectations... Singapore mahhhh! Thought those Kiasus will out-organize Phuket and Bintan. Maybe the sheer number of participants made it too hard even for them.
The results
16th out of 169 WOOOOT WOOOOT HAHAHAHAHA! 2nd Malaysian on age group! (Male 30-34 years)
If only I had pushed it a bit during the swim... the 10th postion was not too far.

2006 Bintan Triathlon race report |
|
 |
|
 |
|
What can I say....
Theres nothing much to say I guess when it comes to the level of local organisation VS the rest of the world (as in my case Thailand and Indonesia) organizing a triathlon Race. Of course one would argue the amount of money it cost to race in a Malaysian Tri VS others.
So let us compare... RM60 for local Tri VS SIN95 for Bintan VS US120 for Phuket
You know what you get on a local tri...
For the other 2,
Good quality goodie bag with proper and useful tri items and NO phampletes or maps from Tourism!
1 Pre-race Carbo loading dinner (Lots more food variety and you wont get diarrhea)
A well organized race... A bike mechanic station. In bintan, they CLOSED the road during the race. In Phuket, one lane is closed for traffic. NO DRAFTING.... and marshals on motorbikes all over the race course guiding and enforcing rules.
Water stations: Water, Isotonic drink, sponge and ice on ALL and they never ran out!
Free MASSAGE after the race including drinks, fruits etc...
1 Post race award dinner + Party. In Bintan each table were given a bottle of either red or white wine of your choice! PLENTY of exotic food including obscene amount of sea food (lobsters, prawns, oxtail, roast beef etc)
Prize money! 1st - US6000 5th - US1000 I know I wont smell the money but with those prizes, it attracts international superstar athelete. Racing with them encourages you to do well, train more and motivates you for other races. Its like buying a new gear.... motivates you wanting to improve, wanting to train and becomes a better athelete.
Okay! now on with the race...
The swim was a 2 loop with a mass beach start. The water was cristal clear as you could see the bottom even at the other end of the loop. It was interesting as I could see stuff 20m underneath me.
A short run to T1
The bike course was SUPERB. 1 big loop of rolling hills with smooth surface. It reminds me A'Famosa. It rained for 20 mins during the bike making the road a bit slippery. I think I saw a few crashes.
There was a small 350m loop at T2. You will have to run the extra 350m loop if you were cought drafting. If you were cought twice, you would have to run the penalty loop twice and so on. Otherwise, you could run straight out into the run course wich was in the golf course.
The run course was a two 5km loop around the HILLY golf course. Reminds me of Kenyir. There were 4 water station making a total of 8 water stations for 10km as you run through them twice. The resort staff are all out around the course to chear you on.
Worth the money??? YOU BET!!!

Sabah Adventure Challenge 2006 |
|
 |
|
 |
|
meta writes "Sabah Adventure Challenge was my first multiple day adventure race. I Didnt know what to expect. Thought it's gonna be something like Eco-X... I WAS WRONG!
The whole race and all the participant in it are all IMPRESSIVE!
Firstly... I REALLY underestimated the race. It was TOUGH! Did I say "Tough"? I mean TOUGH! Weather was HOT. The course was loooooong and the hills were a killer. Thank god the river was heavenly. I AM REALLY GLAD that we decided to downgrade to Adventure Category before we started.
Secondly... Again, totally underestimated the food requirement... cause you just dont know how long the race gonna last. (2nd day took us about 10hrs 40mins) On average, I drank 7 to 10 1.5 littres of mineral water a day during the race! Brought JUST ENOUGH! food to keep me alive. Luckily the race was through some Kampung, and thanks to my quick thinking to bring some cash (I know Steve gonna get hungry!) or we will just be bonked!
Thirdly... The participants.... oh my! Where do I begin...
Adilah... You have my respect! No doubt in my mind that you can complete Ironman with EASE! If you survived that (Sabah Adv) you can survive anything!
Steve... How you carry your BIG stomach up that never ending steep slope of Bukit Kiulu (449m of HELL!) is mind bogling.
All the girls on the race was oh my god! BRUTAL!!! Theres this Singaporean chick... looking nice, innocent with a small sweet voice on the first day... but at the end of the day, youll see, blisters, cuts, bruises all over. And oh my god she ran fast!
And that other Asian girl! Oh my!!! Super fast. (I think her team won or should be in the top 3) Even with all that injury she had on the first day falling down from her bike. Yes Steve, you dont have to mention it... I can see that she got really big tits!
WHAT WHEN ON: 13th (Arrival) - Arrived KK at 0630. Picked up by Dr.Fiona Lim (Super Triathlete). Went to her place for brakefast and preped my bike+equipment.
- Steve, Adilah and GANG! arrived at 0930. We had burger for lunch while waiting for other participants. Bus leaves for Nabalu town at about 1245.
- Steve had mee for second lunch at Nabalu while we had tea and coffee. The bus leaves for Park HQ soon after.
- Went for briefing and dinner after settling down at our lodge. The lodge was something! Had its own fireplace, kitchen with full cooking facility and Astro
14th (EASIEST Day) - Woke up at 0545. Packed, had brakefast and went to starting line.
- Race starts at 0730.
- Went through the whole park navigating looking for 10 out of 20 checks.
- At 0840, completed the 10 checks and headed out on our trusty bike for almost 40km of mountain biking (THE BEST TRAIL EVER)
- Somewhere around noon, we reached the other checkpoint to do Flying FOX.
- 4-5km of river tubing to the final checkpoint of the day... Kampung Melanggang.
- Put up our tent. Went for dinner and race briefing.
15th (Nightmare!!!) - Woke up again at 0545.
- Race starts at 0730 with a 4-5km navigation "trail" run in the jungle to CP1
- 0745... twisted my ankle and got lost... What a way to start a day!
- 3-4km navigation "road" run to CP2
- 3-4km River tubing from CP2 back to CP1(CP3)
- 3-4km navigation road+trail run (diff route) back to CP2(CP4)
- 3km run to CP5
- 8-9km run and a hike up Bukit Kiulu (449m) then back to CP1(CP6)
- Pick up ONE bike (share) to perform 8km mountain-biathlon alternate bike+run with Steve to CP7. Ran between 400m to 1km before switching. The trail peaks at 282m.
- Backtrack the same 8km trail mountain-biathlon to CP1(CP8)
- Perform the last 4-5Km biathlon from CP8 on the tarmac road back to camp site (finish line)
- Almost died... went for dinner and race briefing while waiting for the last team to finish which was almost 2130 i think.
16th (Finally!) - Woke up at 0530. Packed everything to load onto the lorry.
- Race starts at 0730 with 8-10km navigation trail run.
- Abseil down a bridge.
- About 40km bike to KK.
- Picked up Kayak and paddled for 12-15km
- And finally a 4-5 Beach run to finish line.
- Crossed finish line at about 1530 for 7th POSITION!
- Limped back to Dr. Fiona's place for a shower, beer and maggi mee.
- Packed everything and headed to airport at 1715.
- Board MH709 at 1840.
- Reached KL at about 2100 for hugs and kisses from the family.
Will I let myself go through this TORTURE, PAIN and SUFFERING again? YOU BET! I hope to bring my family next time around. Im sure theyll have fun playing at the river by the camp site. Lots of activity to do... cook, BBQ, tubing, rafting, hike etc...

My First Triathlon - by Azmar |
|
 |
|
 |
|
My First Try-athlon. Yes, I did spell it correct. Try-athlon, something that we do almost everyday. We try new things from new nasi lemak to new sleeping position… yeah I can see smirks on your face. Life would be so dull & boring having the same nasi lemak everyday, betul tak???? We should try something new, be it stupid, silly or in my case, adventurous. It doesn’t matter if we got sick or fail, it’s the fun & experience that we gain from even trying. Yes, everybody have their own limit but that doesn’t mean that your have to limit yourself. Remember that we learn to walk before we run. The life is like an open book, read, understand & enjoy it. Don’t just flip through coz when you flip the last page, you will regret not having done this & that. You’ll see life zips thru in front of your eyes when you should have been enjoying every day that God have given to us. I’m not gonna let it happen. I’m gonna live my life to the fullest and so must YOU. It didn’t take long for me to decide that I’m ready to try my first triathlon. With the guide of 3 master swimmers & a few crash courses at the pool, I decide that its time to give it a go. You just need to kick & glide Azmar, do it about 4,000 times & you’ll finish 400m at no time….. Whatttt 4,000 time ah? How much calories you figure I burn ah? Ask Steve & you know that I asked him which one is easier, swim in the lake or pool, like a thousand times. And the answers are always the same, just shut up & god-damn do it. Okay, let’s give it a hell…. let’s just god-damn do it damn-it. Race Day…… Show Time. Arrived in A’famosa roughly at 1:30pm. The devil in me kept on asking “Are you sure you can swim 400m… that is 40,000cm to you dumb-ass ? Its not too late to chicken out bro, there is always other triathlon next month, dah cukup pahala ke mamat…. tenggelam kang tak nyesal ke”. I know the answer the moment I look at Doc. If my little bro can do it, so can I. After all, we share the same stroke, the breast stroke. The stroke that I’m most expert on aka. the only stroke that I know. 3 things that pros do on the race day.
- Just be there & look pretty. Your race fees & gears are all sponsored.
- Walk around & let racers wannabe take photo of you in the middle… eventhough you are not near as handsome as I am.
- Do a bit of marketing by wearing shirt with your sponsor’s logo on it. They pay your dumb-ass to suffer so that they get their 5 seconds of fame on TV.
3 things that amateurs do on the race day.
- Rush to the registration counter so that you don’t miss the race. Saturday is a working day maaa…
- Queue at the registration counter & you will end up rm60/rm30 or in Steve & Zabil’s case rm90 poorer. That’s because of them supporting me on my first tri. Thanks dude, you guys did an amazing job keeping me & my spirit afloat.
- Check on their race kit & shoot back to hotel for carbo loading.
5 things that dumb-ass wannabe like me do on the race day.
- Inferiority complex strikes the moment you/me arrive at the venue. Oh wow, look at that super hi-tech expensive carbon bike, check out that muscles man, these guy surely can swim like a dolphin & run like a cheetah.
- Ask hotel receptionist where race registration counter is. Excuse me, the queue start from left or right? This queue is for sprinter (that is sprint la dumb-ass) or the full (that is Olympic distance la dumb-ass).
- Ask how much is the race fee & get another “are u sure you are not coming for holiday” look from the registration staff. And then whine why its so farking expensive & all you get is a bag full of rubbish except for 1 silly t-shirt.
- Ask other extra stuff like, can I get extra powergel, do I get free night stay today, is there any complimentary lunch, where do I service my bike, do you provide a life jacket just in case I couldn’t finish my swim….bla…bla…bla
- Ask yourself whether you are ready to die…. aka race. Do I have all the gadgets eg. Goggle, swimming cap, running shoes, cycling shoes, tools, tubes etc.
5 things that dumb-ass wannabe like me do just before the race starts.
- Aiyaa… where is my goggle la? Shit, I think I left it la. Do you have extra goggle Zabil? Azahhhhh can you drive back & get my goggle for me pleasseeee
- Ask that abang whether I can wear my race belt with number instead of getting myself tattooed with race number. Cannot la, nanti swim tak laju.
- I think I need to shower before I jump in the lake. Hoi gila… ko ingat mandi swimming pool ke ah…. terjun je la dalam tasik tu… basah gak nanti.
- Wait on the safe ground & let the pros & amateur jump in first. Okay let the kids go first, I’ll catch up with them later.
- Panic……Okay Azmar, time to jump in before race start. Whattt, alamak, bang boleh start kat tepi tasik tak instead of water start. Dude, I’ve training so hard that I forgot the learn how to float/water threading. Bangang gila rasa. It’s okay Azmar, doggie paddling pon boleh. Hey Steve… can I hold on to you before they actually let us start. Your healthy tummy has enough air to keep us float man.
Bang…. allright Azmar, its sink or swim time. I was struggling to keep afloat. Doc advised me earlier to let the main pack go first so that I won’t get myself kick on the face. Clear… kick & glide Azmar. Just keep on going dude. We’ll swim next to you. Don’t worry about drowning . blubbb…blubbb..blubbb. That was the last thing I can hear from Steve & Zabil. Kick & glide… do it for 4,000 times & I’m out for biking. 1..2…3… damn it, I’m getting nowhere. Everything looks so….green. Hey Steve, can you check whether I’m doing it right? I don’t think I move even an inch from my last 5 strokes? You are doing okay, just keep on going dude. Okay…..blubbb…blubbb…blubbb. It took me quite a while before I finally get myself together & find the right stroke rhythm. I’m starting to enjoy myself now. To my right I can see a dolphin giving me 1 big thumb up (that’s Zabil) & on my right I see a huge leatherback turtle combing his hair (… you know who). I thought I saw nemo just before I exited the water. I had probably swallowed 3 catfish by then. The lake wasn’t that bad. I don’t see dead body or crocodile around and I don’t see any fish either. It was warm & 10 times better than public pool. So the myth about the lake being dirty & crocodile infested is very much…. a myth. Out from the water & on to the bike & the run… nahhhh boring stuff. I think we have done it like a million times. You don’t need my report on that do you. So I’ll skip it. Just for the record, I do struggle on the bike & running. It’s been almost a month since I last bike & my last run was KL half. Conclusion : It’s been s super great & fantabulous week. I did my first half marathon (that’s 21km man… yeahhhh big deal) last week & now I have just completed my first triathlon (okay… its just sprint but who cares… I have conquered my fear & that’s farking big deal to me). So what’s next…………… Thanks to Steve for believing that I can swim that far & thanks for the ride to Melaka. Thanks to Zabil & Azah for the moral support & tips on how to swim. Thanks to Doc for just being yourself. You are truly an inspiration bro. To Sam…. Lu memang sempoi. Coming as a tourist & end up racing & not knowing what to expect memang da bomb. I thought he was joking when he wanted to sign up. All he has that day is a pair of running shoes & 1 shorts but he has one thing that most of us don’t have…. 2 big balls to just go out there & out do ourselves. Beskal dia belasah pakai beskal doc. Sekali pandang cam naik beskal BMX je. To Vicky, Ben, Lee & Ishal… good to see familiar faces around. I hope I see more of you racing/participating in future. To the rest…. Come on man. What are you waiting for. Its nothing that you CANNOT do. We fail once we stop trying. Thanks for the supports that you guys gave thru your SMS. Really appreciate & hope its soon that we all can do it together-gether. I AM NOT A CYCLIST I AM NOT A RUNNER I AM NOT A SWIMMER …. I AM DAMN RIGHT A TRIATHLETE…..S
